We all want to be happy. But the thing is, happiness can be elusive. And many of us don’t even know what it is to be truly happy. We have this impression that to be happy means to have no suffering.
But joy and happiness don’t exist in a vacuum. Happiness is knowing that we are all going to face many stressors in life but that we can cope, manage, and find the resilience to deal with those stressors.
In this episode, Smitha Murthy talks about what a frustrating time she has been having (aren’t we all!), but how one small exercise can shift that focus from overwhelming negativity to acknowledging the good as well.
That exercise is 'The Three Good Things', created by Martin Seligman. This is also known as the What-Went-Well exercise.
It’s a very simple journaling exercise to do at the end of the day and helps us to shed our negative bias in viewing the events of the day. It prompts us to stop focusing on the bad and cultivate gratitude and happiness. This is a well-known positive psychology intervention, and studies show that you can expect a shift in your mood levels in a week.
