Moments with Smitha Murthy || Finding calm through the 9 Breaths Purification Technique

Moments with Smitha Murthy || Finding calm through the 9 Breaths Purification Technique
Hosted by podcast@myndstories.com|July 11, 2022

In this episode, Smitha Murthy talks about how she discovered the ancient Tibetan 9 Breaths Purification practice.

Breathwork can be a very powerful tool in dealing with our stressors and anxiety. Having worked her way through every day meditation with Vipassana, Smitha was wondering how to supplement an existing meditation practice with a simple breathing exercise to do anytime.

The answer was: The 9 Breaths

There are many variations of this, including some from the yogic tradition of Pranayama. The one that Smitha talks about here comes from Tibetan Buddhism, though.

The 9 Breaths takes less than a minute and involves some degree of visualization. It might be a bit confusing at first, but stick to it, and it feels like you are using healing light and breath to cleanse the toxins of the past, the anxieties of the future, and the stressors of the present. This is a wonderful way to start or end the day.

You can check out many versions of the Tibetan technique, but Smitha found that this was particularly useful and clear.

This is an excerpt from a book by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche and you can bookmark and save this link to try it out: Nine Purification Breaths (eternityofspirit.com)
