Does India have a mental health crisis? The stats certainly are pointing toward that:
The country has one of the highest rates of major depressive disorders globally. More than 150 million Indians need active mental health interventions. India has the dubious record of being the world’s suicide capital.
There aren’t enough therapists or mental health professionals to meet this demand. NIMHANS is the country’s leading institute for mental health and is organizing a workshop on “Immediate Care for Handling Mental Health Crisis” at the Institute’s Bangalore campus on June 1.
The concept of immediate care refers to trained psychological first-aid responders. It doesn’t require one to be a therapist and provides the individual with ways to identify signs of distress and offer initial support.
The workshop will benefit anyone who is interested in providing support to someone during a mental health crisis.
